What we can help with

We will be aiming to help on two levels – firstly, the purely practical things that you might find your self struggling with either due to self-isolation or because you can no longer get out due to changes in transport arrangements.

  • Shopping for essential provisions
  • Collection of prescriptions
  • GP, medical or other hospital appointments
  • Dog walking

Some shops are offering ‘safe’ opening times for vulnerable shoppers and we would ask that if you are still able to get to the shops yourself that you carry on and do so. Similarly, if you can get yourself to appointments etc., then please do so. Th is will ensure that the volunteer service can be deployed to those that can no longer get out and need our help the most.

The latest bus information can be obtained by visiting Herefordshire Council website and you can sign up for alerts about changes to the bus service that may impact you.

We understand that for many, this is a concerning time and especially difficult if you’re housebound, and so our second way of helping is to off er an ear if you just need someone to chat to. We are committed to ensuring that no one needs to feel alone right now. Get in touch and let us know

A way to connect with loved ones and family over the airwaves

Play, win and help the Lea Village Hall

This is a reminder about the recently formed 100 Club in Lea, where we are raising money to support the village hall, whilst giving residents the opportunity to also be a winner. 

For those new to the concept,  each participant pays £15 a year, this puts their name into the prize draw where monthly winners receive either £5, £10 or £25, plus twice a year the prize is £100. You have just one more day to get involved, or tell others about it! The organiser is Gill Walker, and you send her a quick email here.  

By ensuring you have endorsed your £15 entry fee, you will be put into the first draw taking place this Tuesday 28th April 2020. Obviously if you have pledged your £15 already that’s fine, but do encourage others too. We have over 80 participants to date, but we’d love it to be 100 residents instead. 

Volunteer to support the call for help in the wider area outside Lea

Herefordshire Council are seeking volunteers

These are unprecedented times and the work you do within your communities has never been more vital in keeping people safe and well.

You will though be aware of the impact COVID-19 is having across our country. Herefordshire council and the NHS are working hard preparing for the peak of the virus which is just around the corner. As part of our preparation, we will be rapidly expanding health and social care community service provision.

This will include recruiting a volunteer workforce willing to directly support those most in need. This includes those on the Government’s “shielded” list and those requiring hands on care within our health and social care settings.

  • Full delivery address and any special instructions we may need to find/access your property
  • Which titles you require and on what days
  • The Bank Account number and Sort Code in order to set up a Direct Debit to take payment and the address the account is registered to- if you have vouchers these will be taken into account but details are still required to finalise an account set up
  • E-mail address you’d like the bills to be sent to
  • Contact telephone number in case we ever need to contact you
  • When you’d like the deliveries to start (we can usually start the next day if we process the order before 1pm – if it’s going to be delayed by a day we’ll let you know or you can pick a future start date of your choice)
  • How were you getting your papers before and why are you not getting them that way anymore?

If you could also let us know how you heard about us, it would be much appreciated.

Once all the above information has been confirmed we’ll set your new account up and reply back to confirm what your account number is.

Update to Lea Store opening times

Latest information regarding Lea Store (correct as of 2nd April 2020)

 Lea Stores is no longer supplying newspapers/ magazines during this pandemic. 

New hours are: 

Mon- Sat

  • 9.00 to 10.00 for the elderly / vulnerable only 
  • 10.00- noon for general public but not children
  • Noon-  teenagers and children
  • Closed at 1.00 pm
  • Reopens 5.00- 5.30 for those returning from work 

Sunday

  • 10.00 – noon general public

This app is designed by doctors and scientists at King’s College London, Guys and St Thomas’ Hospitals and Zoe Global Limited, a health technology company.

If you would like to help out in this difficult time, then you can. Download the app and share daily your own status, even if you are well. With your help we can understand much better the situation up and down the country, how the disease presents itself to different people, and how it progresses.

This is a new virus which the UK has never seen before. There are a wide range of symptoms, which differ between people. With your help we can understand better how the disease presents itself depending upon individual factors such as health and age.

No information you share will be used for commercial purposes.

There are two parts to the app:

HEALTH INFORMATION
You will be asked to share some general information, such as your age and some health information, such as whether you have certain diseases.

SYMPTOM TRACKING
We will ask you every day to let us know how you feel, so you can share your symptoms. We will also ask whether you have visited the hospital, what treatment you received there, and whether you have been tested for COVID-19 (Coronavirus).

Temporary suspension of applications for the Universal Credit Transition Fund

Below is an update from the Department of Work and Pensions regarding applications for the Universal Credit Transition Fund – 31st March 2020.

It is with deep regret that owing to the challenging circumstances presented by the coronavirus outbreak we have come to the decision to temporarily suspend the Transition Fund application process.

You will have doubtless seen the news reports outlining the exceptional demand on DWP services at this unprecedented time. Our priority is ensuring people get their benefit payments and protecting vulnerable people who need our support most. We are taking urgent action to boost capacity, including moving 10,000 existing staff to work on new claims with 1,000 already in place, and will recruit a further 1,500 staff to aid the effort. 

Similarly, we have had feedback from many of you that your organisations are not in a position to proceed with an application or mobilise a new project at this time, and like us you’re focussed on the need to keep your colleagues and those you support, safe.

I understand this will be disappointing for you but we will record your interest and return to you if we are in a position to reopen the application process later in the year. If you have already submitted your application, we will hold this on record, provided you are content for us to do so, in the event we are able to progress with the process later in the year. There will be an opportunity for organisations which have already submitted applications to update and amend their bids where necessary.
